Mats Wivesson, President Skal International London

A word from our President:

World Travel Market is over and everyone was busier than ever!

Nearly 100 skålleagues from 30 different clubs world-wide attended our luncheon. We had the opportunity to welcome our new International President, Hulya Aslantas, at her first official function.

A big thank you to the all the managers and staff of Crowne Plaza Hotel. We finished the lunch and speeches for 100 people within 1hr 30minutes. Why can’t we do the same at our monthly meetings being only 25 people?

Thank you Bob Duffett who, as usual, took a commanding roll at the registration desk and did not let anyone slip through – this year with assistance from Robin Jackson.

Our stand at WTM attracted an amazing amount of interest from visitors and indeed past members to meet the more vibrant and youthful London club of today. Overseas interest was especially high on the first day of invitees only. A big thank you to Paul Follows, who not only took charge of the practical arrangements but, as well, spent 4 working days in our stand. Shame though that no more skålleagues from the UK clubs were able to help manning the stand!

Christmas is round the corner! You know that our previous speaker, the Minister of Tourism was “re-shuffled” and the new minister is not working on Fridays. We have an even better incentive for you to book our Christmas Luncheon at the 5-star luxury Mandarin Oriental Hotel - Sir John Southby Bt a world-wide traveller. He will speak about “the ramification of polio in Africa.” Otherwise the same procedure as last year with Christmas carols, the Champagne reception, excellent 3-course meal with wine and coffee. Book now to avoid disappointment!

The AGM in January 2009 is followed by lunch. Please try and come as we want to hear your opinion. We cannot take your club forward without your thoughts!

The President’s Night, the dinner & dance in February, have been changed to a dinner in London, as there is no new President next year. Further details to follow.

You have by now received the membership renewal form for 2009. The increase in membership fee is due to the huge change in the exchange rate between sterling and euro over the last 12 months. We are paying our international dues in Euros. We also have continuously rising costs in running the Club for our members.
